Deb McClintock Presents Intricate Patterns – Simple Threads
Notes to program and workshop chairs, all 3 lectures are appropriate for guild programs during a general meeting. My talks can run from 1 – 2 hours depending on your guild schedule.
Lecture only:
1. CAMBODIAN TEXTILE TOOLS AND METHODS - Learn about the Cambodian tools and methods of weaving hal/hol (ikat). Deb will share her photos and QuickTime movies of her time spent in the Thai and Cambodian workshops that create complex patterns of great beauty. Learn about the tools and how they are used and consider how you may apply these methods to your work. Deb encourages folks who have Cambodian textile pieces to bring them to share with fellow class members. On her trips to Cambodia quality textile prices were astronomical and she only has a few actual textiles to show. Deb chose to buy equipment pieces to accompany her technique photographs.
2. LOOMS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA - Travel with Deb to Southeast Asia and learn about the simple looms used to create intricate patterns. We'll compare looms in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Burma. We'll also look at how reeds are handmade to order and learn about making heddles by hand. Deb will have sample textiles for you to touch and look at. This program is the result of 2000 and 2002 Research Expedition Program with the University of California – Davis and independent trips in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006 to Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Burma.
Equipment Needs : Digital projector that can communicate with an IBOOK, two tables with table clothes or coverings to protect fabric, podium if possible. All presentations are in Power Point.
Lecture & Mini-workshops(email for a brochure):
3. LADIES OF LAOS Learn how to use the vertical heddle pattern equipment used to store pattern pickup by the weavers of the province of Hua Phan in northern Laos. Explore its use to create extraordinary fabrics that glow with brilliant color and intricate patterns. Ponder the supplementary warp production methods of the weavers. Learn how these methods are combined for traditional skirt construction. Go through equipment and set up steps needed to modify your loom to use this method. For hands on exploration everyone will take a turn making a set of dills for the khao nyai. In the mini-workshop we push further and set up your looms for storing pickup. (Warning – not all looms are appropriate but we will set up at least one loom to ensure all participants can see and use the technique.)
Equipment Needs for Lao lecture/mini-workshop: Digital projector that can communicate with an IBOOK, two tables with table clothes or coverings to protect fabric, podium if possible. Both presentations are in Power Point. Additional equipment needs will be discussed when mini-workshop is booked.
